The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced open text book assessment (OTBA) to give students relief from the burden of studying intensely. As we all know, CBSE is a prestigious educational board in India and it is appreciated due to its standardized syllabi and other worthwhile learning materials, which are ideally prepared for the beneficial of students. A good number of subject experts are associated with this eminent board and they analyze students’ learning activities, difficulties as well as their progress and based on that, they prepare suitable learning documents for students of different classes. However, open text book assessment is a section and it is added in the question papers designed for March 2014 final exam. The board has allotted 30 minutes extra time for solving the open text book assessment. Moreover, it is applicable for class 9 and 11 students. The board is maintaining the same question pattern and OTBA is nothing but an additional part of the question paper and it is added to make students aware about the implementation of knowledge in real life situations.
The board has clarified that students will get 3 hours for solving normal question papers and additional ½ hours for CBSE OTBA. In brief, total three and half hours for solving the entire question paper. It is applied for all subjects of class 9 and some subjects of class 11. Moreover, the board has explained that these 30 minutes are extra time in addition to that 15 minutes, which are allotted for reading the question paper. However, OTBA section is only for class 9 and 11 students and it is a part of the final examinations. All affiliated schools of CBSE are instructed to follow the same.
This innovative process allows students to acquire information process skill. Additionally, through this section, students can systematically enhance their analytical, comprehension as well as inference skills. The associated teachers of schools will guide students in understanding the process. Moreover, open text materials are prepared by the board and these are suitably formed for class 9 and 11 students. Sample questions are also added in each text material and these questions give teachers as well as students a clear idea about that.
The OTBA study materials for class 9 include different subjects such as Hindi, English, Mathematics, Social Science and Science. Additionally, some text materials are prepared for class 11 students. Economics, Biology and Geography text materials are designed for class 11 students. However, this section is implemented for these subjects in March, 2014. The board has prepared OTBA text materials in advance so that students can get enough time to focus on these. Students are encouraged to refer to this section during their examination. The board has added this section to strengthen the system of examination. Moreover, the board has decided to add the open text book assessment score with the main subject.
OTBA is useful for students as it does not encourage the rote learning. It steers students to express their own views and understanding. This assessment motivates students to use theories in the practical situations. However, it is started to make students prepared for any question. Learning does not mean to read contents and gather knowledge haphazardly rather it encourages students to understand things in a right manner so that they can implement acquired knowledge suitably. However, this assessment is added in the exams to make students aware about the way to relate their knowledge with real-life situations.
